Matthews: Enjoying The Downtown Historic District
Established in the 1800s, Matthews, NC was a small farming district and stood with its original name Stumptown. Located between Monroe and Charlotte, the region used to be pristine woodlands, with large trees covering the area. This where later on cleared to provide land for agriculture, leaving numerous tree stumps in the process, hence the name Stumptown. In 1825, the town took the name Fullwood as a tribute to the region’s first postmaster, John Fullwood. Accessible via a plane ride to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and the Wilgrove Air Park Airport, it is known today as the ‘Seaboard Air Line Railroad.”
