Goris is a town located up in the mountains in Syunik Province, the southernmost province of Armenia. The name “Goris” was derived from the Indo-European words “gor”, meaning, “rock”, and “es” meaning “to be”. Thus Goris referred to “a rocky place”. Goris, Armenia is located near the Varavak River and is surrounded by the Zangezur Mountains. The area is served by the nearby Goris Airport.
