During the early 1980s, Marriott has troubles in finding the right brands that will accommodate services for the family. Courtyard was then introduced in 1983 to provide lodging and accommodation services for business travelers. Courtyard became a hit and quickly grew from 3 hotels during its year launch to 90 in just 4 years.

The first Courtyard hotel was built in Atlanta. The brand also became the very first American hotel in the Island of Bonaire that features an onsite scuba diving shop. At present, there are over 1,100 Courtyard Marriott Hotels around the globe.
