Mainz: A Historic City by the Rhine River
Known as the capital and the biggest city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz, Germany is a city lying on the riverbanks of Rhine. It is an independent city, housing over 206,000 residents. The Romans founded Mainz during the 1st Century BC as a military fortress for the Roman Empire’s northernmost frontier. Mainz then played an essential role in the 8th Century AD as it was assigned the seat of the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz. Best Time to Visit
While Mainz celebrates plenty of festivals throughout the year, the ultimate event is held in June. The Mainzer Johannisnacht (St. John's Night Festival) runs for four days and features numerous musical performances, a book and artists’ market, and the joyful ‘Buchdruckertaufe’ (printers’ baptism). During this time of year, the weather is just right for outdoor activities, making it a pretty bust season for the town. Meanwhile, the tourist population in the area declines come September, so expect plenty of discounted room rates at most of Mainz, Germany hotels.

Located within a kilometer away from the city center, you can find the luxurious hotels of Hilton Mainz, Hyatt Regency Mainz, and iBis Mainz City. All three of them provide in-house breakfast upon request and are within a few minutes’ walk to Gutenberg Museum and Mainz State Theater. From the theatre, you can easily reach the Naturhistorisches Museum, which houses the most extensive natural history collection in Rhineland-Palatinate.
