Charleville-Mezieres, France is a commune made up of 2 originally separate communities on the opposite banks of the Meuse River, Charleville and Mezieres. The former was established by Charles Gonzaga, duke of Mantua, in the early 17th century. In the mid-19th century, these 2 communities were connected by a suspension bridge. The current commune was founded in 1966. With puppetry playing an important role in its culture, it is known as the “World Capital of Puppetry Arts”.
