The brands flagship hotel was opened in 2003 - Axel Hotel Barcelona. By 2009, the brand began to expand internationally and opened their first ever hotel outside Spain. Axel Hotel Berlin was opened in 2009 and became the first international hotel under the brand. More hotels were opened afterwards which includes a beach hotel in Maspalomas in Gran Canaria- Axel Beach Maspalomas. In 2015, another Axel Hotel was opened in July 2015 - TWO Hotel Barcelona by Axel and became the second Axel Hotel located in Barcelona.
Owner by Axel Corporation, the brand remains to be one of the pioneers and global leaders in providing accommodation specifically for the gay community. Before 2019 ends, the brand plans to open a new hotel, this time in South Beach, United States – Axel Beach Miami. Three more hotels are bound to be added to the hotel’s portfolio by 2020 - Valencia, Spain, Bilbao, Spain and Madeira, Portugal.
