Located three miles northwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a military and public airport that serves the greater Sioux Falls area in addition to eastern South Dakota and nearby localities of Minnesota and Iowa.The Sioux Falls Regional Airport, also known as Joe Foss Field in honor of the city’s native son and aviator Joe Foss, carries the IATA code FSD. Inaugurated in 1937 as a civilian airport, the largest airport in South Dakota became the Sioux Falls Army base during World War II and after the war was reverted to being a civil airport but with the south portion leased to South Dakota Air National Guard.
