The airport began as a grass only airstrip. It was paved over with asphalt and was reopened in 2002. It was later decommissioned three years later in 2005 due to concerns over safety and noise. It reopened in 2009 and resumed service including select international destinations. Previously jointly owned and operated by the Samoan Government and Polynesian Airlines, the state-owned flag carrier airline of the country. The Samoa Airport Authority operates it now. Airlines that have operated in the airport include Samoa Air, Polynesian Airlines, South Pacific Island Airways, and Talofa Airways. International destinations include Pago Pago in American Samoa. In addition to the capital, Fagali’I Airport also serves Apia and Downtown Apia.
