Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport was established in the 1950s, upon the order of the then president of the Republic of Colombia, General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla. Primarily, the airport was built to serve San Andres, Colombia in the Caribbean. It was known as Sesquicentenario Airport before it was renamed to honor General Pinilla. Today, the airport is owned by Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics or Aerocivil, a Colombian Ministry of Transport agency that is in charge of regulating civil aviation and managing airspace in Colombia.
