The Olympic Dam Airport is a private airport operated by BHP, Olympic Dam Operations, and can be found more than 500 kilometers from the town of Adelaide. It primarily serves the Olympic Dam Mine, a massive polymetallic underground mine located in Olympic Dam, South Australia, Australia. The private airport doesn’t have an FFA code but is assigned the IATA code of OLP, which is also used for FlightStats. Between 2010 and 2011, the Olympic Dam Airport was the 48th biggest airport in Australia, in terms of revenue passengers. OLP now handles about 70,000 passengers and 2,000 aircraft movements annually.
Best Time to Visit
The airport only has a single runway, covered in asphalt, and stretches to just over 1,500 meters. There were plans on expanding the airport in 2006, which discussed either extending the current airport or constructing a new one in the nearby Andamooka. They settled on relocating the airfield in case the mine extends. In 2011, the expansion plans were outlined, which included improvements in the current airport to handle jets and passenger service, along with transforming the airstrip to an all-weather runway. Currently, only Alliance Airlines offer a public transport service from Olympic Dam to the nearby town of Adelaide.
