Misasa: Home of Japan’s Famous Hot Springs
A town in Tottori, Misasa, Japan has an interesting name. It literally means “three (3) mornings”, which was derived from the belief that anyone who stays for three (3) mornings in its hot springs will be cured from any ailment.

Misasa has the perfect weather during the months of April through June and September through November. The busiest months are usually February, March, and July. Tourists are least likely to visit in October. Every August, locals celebrate the Marie Curie Festival. First held in 1951, it is one of the most important festivals in town as it pays tribute to Curie, who is well-known for being the first to discover radium. The main highlight of the festival is Waiwai Parade. People put on traditional clothes and perform local dances. There are also fireworks display during the event. Another event to look forward to is Hanaya Festival, which is held every May 4. It is designed to celebrate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha. Moreover, it celebrates the hot springs for which the town is known. The main highlight of the festival is Jinsho, a massive tug of war.

The town is popular for Mitokusan Sanbutu-ji Temple, a Buddhist temple built during the Heian period. Its Nageire Hall has been recognized as a National Treasure of Japan. The Buddhist temple is situated on top of another famous destination, Mt. Mitoku. Since ancient times, it has been considered as a place of religious importance as well as of scenic beauty.
