Invercargill Airport is known in New Zealand as the southernmost controlled airport in the Commonwealth. It is located at the bottom of the South Island, west of Invercargill central business district. What was once an airport prone to flood, now has a secured terminal, a backup international secured terminal and 5 tarmac gates.

The IVC Airport is located on what was formerly a tidal estuary lake. Water is continually drained with the use of an efficient tidal pumping system to prevent flooding. Over the years, the airport has seen a lengthening of the runway to cater to larger aircrafts, with efforts that started as early as 1939. Today, the runway length of the airport is 2210 meters. The airport also recently went through a construction for a new terminal building in 2013 costing $13.3 million. The new terminal is designed for further expansion. The airport also complied with international regulations to make it a secured facility, for both domestic and international passengers.
