In 1921, there is a proposal to create an aerodrome in the town of Mudgee. The proposal was for a private airstrip. In 1933, the facility earned a licensed to be a public air facility. The first passenger air flight from Mudgee to Sydney took off in August 3, 1937. It was facilitated by Southern Airlines and Freighters Limited. For years, the airport used Mudgee Racecourse as a landing area. However, in 1949 the government has canceled the licensed proving that the racecourse was an unsuitable runway. In 1955, the government has rezoned the area and it was reopened again. Merriwa is a city that surrounds the airport.
