The airport is geographically located 31.2 km from the city center of Changchun. The cities of Changchun and Jilin are the two cities that are responsible for operating the airport. China Southern Airlines consider the facility as a regional hub. The construction of the airport started in 2003 and after two years its operation has begun. The airport has replaced the Changchun Dafangshen Airport which was used by the military. Flights from Jilin Ertaizi Airport were transferred the same year.
