The hotel chain is owned by lodging franchisor Choice Hotels, formerly known as Quality Courts or Quality International. These hotels range from economy to extended stay, from mid-scale to upscale, and from limited service to full-service hotels.
Clarion Hotels was established in 1987 after the conversion of an upper mid-priced segment of Quality International, Quality Royale to the brand. It was meant to compete with Four Points by Sheraton and Red Lion Hotels. Its boutique line, Ascend Collection (formerly Clarion Collection), is designed for historical hotels with established local identities.
