Aitutaki Airport – AIT
Found on the island of Aitutaki, Cook Islands, Aitutaki Airport serves as the primary entry point via air into the island. This domestic public airport one of the nine airports constructed in the island group and was initially used in World War II. During this time, the airport served as the landing area for the aircraft of the New Zealand and United States military members. Aitutaki Airport’s runway, which is a little over 1,800 meters in length, is an asphalt-covered pathway that was upgraded in 2004 after having been used during the World War II era. There is one terminal building in the airfield which has few windows and a tiny convenience stall for drinks and snacks. Guests can also find resort meet-and-greet stalls right inside of the building. Although the sign at the entrance of the airport reads “Aitatuki International Airport,” there are currently no international flights offered here. The only airline serving Aitatuki Airport is Air Rarotonga, which provides flights to Atiu and Rarotonga with the Embraer Bandeirante and Saab 340A aircraft.
