About Econo Lodge By Choice Hotels Brand Hotels

Before Super 8, there was Econo Lodge. Based in the United State and Canada, this economy motel chain brand is the second largest brand under the Choice Hotels group. Created to provide the finest accommodations under the budget-friendly category by Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr, Econo Travel now Econo Lodge materialized with funding and marketing help from Lloyd Tarbutton, a local businessman.

Interestingly, business started with Sandy Econo, the hotel’s “mascot” dressed in a Scottish skirt and tam walking around the neighborhood giving away brochures. However, the hotel chain was sold in 1983 for $836 million, all 306 hotels and adapted the name Econo Lodge instead of Econo Travel. The brand was sold and bought several times before Paul Wallace bought the brand and refurbished it and eventually sold it to Choice Hotels International in 1990.

Eventually, this hotel concept located in 865 Military Highway grew from one location to 800 hotels under the Econo Lodge brand today. Initially, there were 40 rooms in each property located near highways and roads. Expansion continues and by 2013, there were around 830 Econo Lodge hotels open and operating in the United States with 28 more under development. Every state in the U.S. and the Canadian province has an Econo Lodge in it.

never go there again and...

Pros: The bed was comfortable and the room was acceptably clean.
Cons: Lobby was closed for no apparent reason looking through the window. Had to stand outside in the cold behind several other guests and book my room through a sliding window. Room was very small and not well sound proofed from the other rooms especially the floor above me. No breakfast or even coffee or a cookie offered.

Disgusting & after fees on...

Pros: Nothing really. It was better than sleeping outside if that was an option. Unfortunately, that wasn't a risk for us so this place was all bad.
Cons: It was so nasty! Soap splashes from other people lined the wall by the sink. Every lightswitch covered in gray grime, hair on the toilets and in the shower, grime drips on walls and backs of doors, grime from people touching doors all over on the edge nearest to the doorknob. The entire place smelled like that one bad night in jail in your youth. Also, despite them cleaning the rooms immediately after a 10 hr stay where we slept and left and renting the room back out within the week I'm sure, they can't manage to say "no damage here" or "yep this is damaged" and give the damage deposit that cost as much as the room did before 7 days and the attendant didn't even have a solid answer on the when so hopefully they don't just steal our money. Unnecessary for sure.

Never again without housekeeping service.

Pros: Parking
Cons: No housekeeping service due to Covid, I didn't know that when I booked, I borrowed the vacuum to clean my own floor. I had to search for towels and washcloths. Bed linens weren't changed the entire stay. It was a smoking room but wasn't bad until you opened the fridge.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

Pros: Nothing
Cons: The hour run around about their policies that was not included in booking.com. Staff would not allow me to talk to the manager over the hotel. Staff was unsympathetic to meeting my needs as a guest. Hotel took the full amount for the two days instead of just one as stated on website. We was charged full price because of only one of us having an out of state id. It was a horrible experience that caused me to have an anxiety attack. We ended up only staying the one night instead of two due to being charged for having a local id. Also the TV wouldn't work properly. It wouldn't cut on at first then the sound was static & couldn't hear what was being said
