Pros: We were put in a nice room for the second and third nights. The breakfast was good.

Cons: We had prepaid for the 3 nights and although we arrived late I had called a couple of hours earlier to say that. There had obviously been a shortage of rooms with the renovations but we should never have been put into the room we received the first night . It was definitely not supposed to be used as it was more the calibre of a hostel. No resemblance at all to the photos on any website and basically in the renovation area rather than the open section of the hotel. We should have been relocated for the first night if they didn’t have any suitable rooms.

Pros: The breakfast was nice and the staff in the breakfast lounge were friendly.

Cons: The staff at the reception desk were all incredibly unfriendly and rude. They did not make us feel welcome throughout our two night stay. They clearly hate their jobs as they looked and sounded grumpy and miserable whenever we engaged with them. We left our luggage when we arrived as it wasn’t time to check in; when we collected this it had been shoved in a random side room accessible to all. This was not a secure place to keep luggage and when we collected our bags we could have easily taken other people’s belongings as reception staff did not care and just pointed us in the direction of the suitcases. It was disappointing that we had not been informed ahead of our trip that there was major construction taking place at the hotel. This created some minor inconveniences but also meant the hotel did not look as impressive as expected. The photos of the hotel reception/foyer on booking.com looked beautiful. We didn’t get to see this during our stay. Instead, we entered and exited via a back carpark. We could not enjoy the grounds of the hotel at all. The lift in the hotel was painfully slow. We were staying on the 7th floor and it was quicker to walk the 7 flights than wait for the lift (I tested this theory). When we arrived at our room, there was a half drunk bottle of water in there which led us to believe the hotel room hadn’t been adequately cleaned ahead of our arrival. Unacceptable in any situation but especially when we weren’t able to check in until 4pm. With such a late check in you’d expect the room to be spotless. The reception area was also often dirty; one day there was a random lump of cheese on the floor which multiple staff could see but none of them bothered to pick it up. I requested a room with a nice view as it was a special occasion; this request was not accommodated for. The man at the reception desk incorrectly told us we had been “upgraded” when in actual fact we were given the room I had paid for.

Pros: Breakfast was very nice, plenty to choose from. Staff were very nice and friendly.

Cons: One of the chairs at the table had peas on it from dinner the night before. Would have been nice to have seen it cleaned properly. The guy on reception could have been a bit more cheerful.

Pros: A fabulous hotel. At present being refurbished but that didn't detract from our stay. Looking forward to seeing the main part of the hotel once refurbishments are completed. The statues in the garden areas are amazing!! Fabulous photo opportunities.

Cons: The 2 males on reception were miserable and when we asked for our luggage we were told where to fetch it from. We couldve taken anyones luggage. He couldnt be bothered to get up from the desk!

Pros: We love this hotel we try and come when possible every thing is spot on all staff go out of your way to be so helpful it was our 1st wedding anniversary so helpful from reception to bar staff breakfast always good rooms very clean nothing to fault so thanks we be back

Pros: The king size bed was so comfortable that we wished we could have stayed longer. If the hotel were any closer to the train it would be sitting on the rails, so a great combination of trains and great beds have always lulled me to sleep.

Cons: Will be glad when the renovations are completed.

Cons: This hotel should be closed during renovation. Makeshift reception near storage room. Nothing like photos because hotel was closed apart from restaurant. Phone, light, tap, lift not working. Very dangerous threshold to door in restaurant caused my 83 year husband to stumble and family on table nearby said it happened to them too. This was Nothing like the website photos.

Pros: when we had issues with the room(s) we were put in we were upgraded to a beautiful suite.

Pros: The room was a new one I think. It was of a good standard and clean and the bed was kingsize. The staff at breakfast were very attentive and helpful. The buffet was good.

Cons: First of all we had no idea the hotel was undergoing renovation works. There is nothing regarding this on the website or very obvious in the booking information if it's mentioned there. On our arrival we walked with our bags from the car park to the front entrance only to find a small sign which told us to go back through the car park and find the makeshift reception. I was greeted by a messy area full of workmen and a reception that was entirely unwelcoming. The male staff member on duty didn't care to help, wasn't exactly friendly and was just interested in booking us in as quickly as possible. When I mentioned the refurb he simply told me that it "wouldn't affect my stay". It did affect my stay. Being greeted in such an unfriendly, dismissive manner is not what I expected. It was my partners birthday and I had anticipated a warm and friendly arrival which we didn't get. Furthermore, when we visited the bar that evening the barman was as equally as unwelcoming and unhelpful. I mentioned we'd asked for no housekeeping and could we get a free drink (as we'd added this to our booking) and he said "you go to the reception, they give you the voucher, then you give me the voucher, then you can have your drink". Incredibly unhelpful and borderline rude. I only wanted a small diet coke. The hotel is directly opposite the train station, so in that respect very convenient. The area though is pretty miserable so the walk into the city centre isn't great with lots of run down shops. I sent the above as an email to the hotel manager. As expected, I didn't hear back.

Pros: Very clean room, spacious, comfy bed. Great location right by the train station - but very quiet!

Cons: Hotel currently undergoing renovations which we weren’t informed of before hand. Lots of building work. Hotel did look quite tired and tatty in places. Expensive for the facilities on offer.
