About Econo Lodge By Choice Hotels Brand Hotels

Before Super 8, there was Econo Lodge. Based in the United State and Canada, this economy motel chain brand is the second largest brand under the Choice Hotels group. Created to provide the finest accommodations under the budget-friendly category by Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr, Econo Travel now Econo Lodge materialized with funding and marketing help from Lloyd Tarbutton, a local businessman.

Interestingly, business started with Sandy Econo, the hotel’s “mascot” dressed in a Scottish skirt and tam walking around the neighborhood giving away brochures. However, the hotel chain was sold in 1983 for $836 million, all 306 hotels and adapted the name Econo Lodge instead of Econo Travel. The brand was sold and bought several times before Paul Wallace bought the brand and refurbished it and eventually sold it to Choice Hotels International in 1990.

Eventually, this hotel concept located in 865 Military Highway grew from one location to 800 hotels under the Econo Lodge brand today. Initially, there were 40 rooms in each property located near highways and roads. Expansion continues and by 2013, there were around 830 Econo Lodge hotels open and operating in the United States with 28 more under development. Every state in the U.S. and the Canadian province has an Econo Lodge in it.

Pros: They knew when I was arriving (and explicitly approved it), but still no one was there when I arrived. Despite a "24 hour reception", I arrived at 11.30pm, and no one was present to check me in until 11:55 pm. I rang and left numerous messages on the phone number left at reception, during this time, none of which made any difference.
Cons: The lamp next to the bed didn't work.

If youre looking for a cheap place to sleep for a few hour, its ok. Youll get what you paid for.

Pros: The staff was willing to keep switching our rooms, but they had to keep switching our rooms because something was very wrong in our first two rooms. The third room was acceptable though for just sleeping 2am to 8am like I did, so I guess thats praise.
Cons: The place is a mess, the interior is hideous and old. We had to change rooms twice. In the first room, the A/C was clearly very broken (on a 100 day) and the fire detector beeped every 30 seconds. The second room they gave us was still currently occupied. The third room had A/C and was quiet. It kinda looked like someone had been murdered in the corner of the room, but we just ignored that.

Horror Hotel-DO NOT STAY HERE!!

Pros: Nothing. This place should be condemned.
Cons: Everything. It is dirty beyond belief, everything is broken and falling apart. The elevator doesn't even have an inspection certificate. When I got to the room is wreaked of cigarette smoke, even though it was non smoking. Upon opening the door, a BLAST of hot, smelly air hit us. The AC was on cool and set at 69, but the whole unit was busted apart and clearly didn't work. Bed spread was dirty with cigarette holes; pillow cases were STAINED. Didn't even stay long enough to check the sheets or bathroom. I felt unsanitary just standing in the room. The lady at the front desk was so rude about it. I asked for a refund within 15 minutes of checking in, as there is a sign saying as long as you're within this timeframe, they will refund. The lady got even more foul and argued with me about it. Finally a younger gentleman intervened and gave me my refund. Also, it advertises for $52, but they charged me $80. Disgusting. This listing should be REMOVED from booking.com completely.
