About Econo Lodge By Choice Hotels Brand Hotels

Before Super 8, there was Econo Lodge. Based in the United State and Canada, this economy motel chain brand is the second largest brand under the Choice Hotels group. Created to provide the finest accommodations under the budget-friendly category by Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr, Econo Travel now Econo Lodge materialized with funding and marketing help from Lloyd Tarbutton, a local businessman.

Interestingly, business started with Sandy Econo, the hotel’s “mascot” dressed in a Scottish skirt and tam walking around the neighborhood giving away brochures. However, the hotel chain was sold in 1983 for $836 million, all 306 hotels and adapted the name Econo Lodge instead of Econo Travel. The brand was sold and bought several times before Paul Wallace bought the brand and refurbished it and eventually sold it to Choice Hotels International in 1990.

Eventually, this hotel concept located in 865 Military Highway grew from one location to 800 hotels under the Econo Lodge brand today. Initially, there were 40 rooms in each property located near highways and roads. Expansion continues and by 2013, there were around 830 Econo Lodge hotels open and operating in the United States with 28 more under development. Every state in the U.S. and the Canadian province has an Econo Lodge in it.

Pros: The room was ok. The staff was ok. The location was ok but on a busy street during rush hours so getting around at that time was problematic. However, the location within walking distance of a few restaurants.
Cons: The breakfast area was under construction so the breakfast was really just cereal or stuff cooked in the toaster. Coffee was terrible.

Easy Walk to Old Town

Pros: Though it looks a little scrappy on the outside, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The location was great as we were able to walk to the Old Town area. We rented bikes from Routes and had an excellent bike ride along the Rio Grande, a beer at a brew house, then pizza dinner - all an easy walk from the Econo Lodge!

EconoLodge Stay in downtown Albuquerque

Pros: Location. Room was large, beds very comfortable . Was able to utilize the refrigerator and microwave to buy my own food and make my own meals .
Cons: Didn't like that the pool was too cold to really enjoy and the hot tub had white particles floating in it. Not sure what it was . No hot breakfast available due to remodeling the dining area. Loved the location but didn't realize that it was right on a main artery of the city and it was noisy .

Adequate stay in a great...

Pros: The location is the important part. It's about the only budget option near Old Town Albuquerque. It still wasn't close enough for us to walk but there were adequate parking lots near Old Town. Even though the hotel was packed, the rooms were very quiet. They must be soundproofed because we couldn't even hear people walking by. It was nice and clean. There is a great Mexican restaurant within walking distance from the hotel. You should know that this is an old-style motel so that means no elevator.
Cons: We were surprised that the entire foyer was under construction. Also there was no dining room, just a table set up where a staff member served us. The Grab and Go breakfast was very limited.

This was the least expensive...

Pros: This is a budget motel, and the women who check guests in were pleasant and friendly.
Cons: I've stayed here three or four times for a yearly convention in the fall and decided to stay again as I was passing through Albuquerque this week. Seven months ago, the lobby was under renovation...when I returned, nothing had changed. Tables were still blocking off the lobby. Breakfast was "grab and go"...a few sweet rolls and bananas, although there was a woman behind the tables who would cook you a waffle to go. Not sure why the renovation has stalled and didn't check to see if the pool was open or could be reached other than through the lobby. Also, no vending, just a soft drink machine. I was directed to walk to the adjacent convenience store for any snacks.
