About Econo Lodge By Choice Hotels Brand Hotels

Before Super 8, there was Econo Lodge. Based in the United State and Canada, this economy motel chain brand is the second largest brand under the Choice Hotels group. Created to provide the finest accommodations under the budget-friendly category by Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr, Econo Travel now Econo Lodge materialized with funding and marketing help from Lloyd Tarbutton, a local businessman.

Interestingly, business started with Sandy Econo, the hotel’s “mascot” dressed in a Scottish skirt and tam walking around the neighborhood giving away brochures. However, the hotel chain was sold in 1983 for $836 million, all 306 hotels and adapted the name Econo Lodge instead of Econo Travel. The brand was sold and bought several times before Paul Wallace bought the brand and refurbished it and eventually sold it to Choice Hotels International in 1990.

Eventually, this hotel concept located in 865 Military Highway grew from one location to 800 hotels under the Econo Lodge brand today. Initially, there were 40 rooms in each property located near highways and roads. Expansion continues and by 2013, there were around 830 Econo Lodge hotels open and operating in the United States with 28 more under development. Every state in the U.S. and the Canadian province has an Econo Lodge in it.

Not a good family place

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Everything it was a horrible place. The lady tried to double charge us. There was a prostitute in the lobby when we were checking in. Pretty sure the lady that checked us in did a drug deal. Not safe for kids to be in. Someone tried to get in our room. We left after the first night. We will never stay again!!!!!

Not what it seemed online

Pros: The lady at check in is nice.
Cons: I reserved this stay because it said there was airport shuttle. They failed to state shuttle ends at 2 PM. My “nonsmoking “ room smells of smoke and is making me nauseous. I don’t think the air filter is clean. The air outside is smoggy so no relief there.

Pros: The hotel is in the midst of a remodel. Once completed it will be a nice property located off old town square.
Cons: The motion lights kept going on and off randomly during the night waking us up. The front desk seemed unconcerned when we reported the problem.

Great location, good value

Pros: Staff was super friendly and helpful. Gave great restaurant recommendations. Location was walking distance to Aquarium, Botanical Garden and Old Town.
Cons: The lobby area was being renovated so breakfast...such as it was...was kind of a grab-and-go buffet on tables near the check-in desk manned by a staff person who would get juice etc. Not much to it.

Mediocre but spacious room.

Pros: Rooms were spacious and the location was excellent.
Cons: At noon on our second day, they remotely shut off our air conditioning and frig from noon to three. They also invalidated our keys. We had to go to the office twice to get it straightened out. No apology from them. Breakfast was poor and you had to eat in your room as there was no seating area. The food was blocked off and you had to ask the staff to give you something but you couldn’t see what was available. Staff not friendly.
