About Econo Lodge By Choice Hotels Brand Hotels

Before Super 8, there was Econo Lodge. Based in the United State and Canada, this economy motel chain brand is the second largest brand under the Choice Hotels group. Created to provide the finest accommodations under the budget-friendly category by Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr, Econo Travel now Econo Lodge materialized with funding and marketing help from Lloyd Tarbutton, a local businessman.

Interestingly, business started with Sandy Econo, the hotel’s “mascot” dressed in a Scottish skirt and tam walking around the neighborhood giving away brochures. However, the hotel chain was sold in 1983 for $836 million, all 306 hotels and adapted the name Econo Lodge instead of Econo Travel. The brand was sold and bought several times before Paul Wallace bought the brand and refurbished it and eventually sold it to Choice Hotels International in 1990.

Eventually, this hotel concept located in 865 Military Highway grew from one location to 800 hotels under the Econo Lodge brand today. Initially, there were 40 rooms in each property located near highways and roads. Expansion continues and by 2013, there were around 830 Econo Lodge hotels open and operating in the United States with 28 more under development. Every state in the U.S. and the Canadian province has an Econo Lodge in it.

Pros: We did not stay at this hotel and we are seeking a refund. We checked in saw the filth under the sheets and on the comforters. There where bed bugs crawling up the walls and we walked right out and had a very hard time finding a place to stay after.

Pros: The location was convenient but also on a very busy road. There was plenty of places for food and gas around. It was mostly peaceful in the hotel. Staff was alright.
Cons: The hotel is in desperate need of an update. The outside is decaying and creepy, preparing you for the condition on the inside(which is poor). At the very least, the ¿cleaning¿ job they do needs to be stepped up greatly. Everything was filthy.

Good
Pros: Econo Lodge was easy to get to and did not have very many guests so it was rather quiet. The room had vinyl plank floors so I did not have to think about what scary things could be in/on carpet.
Cons: Econo Lodge was listed as having a pool and free breakfast. The pool was closed (and appears to have been for a while) and breakfast was not available. The linens on the bed were worn and had a few stains and small tears. A cash deposit was required.

Cons: No pool or breakfast although it shows on their website that they do. Wouldn’t have stayed here if I had known that. When I arrived at midnight, they said “there’s no breakfast. Is that ok?” what am

Fair
Pros: The room was pretty good from previous econo lodge inn stays.
Cons: You have to leave a $100 deposit in cash, they also just give you the money back when you check out without checking to see if you have ransacked the room which doesn’t make any sense.

Very Poor
Cons: Demanded we pay $100 CASH deposit on top of what we paid for room. Using debit/credit card was not an option it had to be cash. He also said it was highly unlikely we would get the $100 CASH deposit back. We ended up staying at hotel across street!

Very Poor
Pros: Nothing.
Cons: The front desk staff were extremely rude! They refused entry unless $100 cash was provided as a deposit and wouldn’t take a credit card. Then while I left to get cash they canceled my reservation and I had to go stay at a different hotel.

Very Poor
Pros: Nothing. But we didn’t even get to stay. So maybe that’s unfair.
Cons: We were asked for a $100 cash only deposit. I have never in my life heard of a hotel asking for this. The lady was sitting outside in the front drive, smoking a cigarette when we arrived. She was really rude. I feel like they were trying to scam people.
