It is a privately owned airport that is located in the island of Ko Samui, Thailand. Its airport code, USM, stands for the name of the island Ko Samui. The code should be KSM, but since it was already used by St. Mary Airport, so they used USM instead. The airport construction by Bangkok Airways began in 1982 and formally used beginning in 1989. In 2008, Thai Airways began its flights to Ko Samui. Annually, the airport can handle more than a million passengers.
