Constructed in 1909, the Brescia Gabriele D'Annunzio Airport is located in the town of Montichiari, southwest of Brescia in the northern Italian region of Lombardi. Also known as Montichiari Airport, it sits on the site of Italy’s first air race meeting in September of 1909 – also the first one outside of France. Among those in attendance were aviators Louis Bleriot and Glenn Curtiss. General Gabriele D'Annunzio, Prince of Montenevoso and Duke of Gallese, who was also a poet, playwright, and journalist, was also in attendance, flying in aboard one of Curtiss’ planes.
