The United States Army first built SMX Airport during the 2nd World War. It was named Santa Maria Army Air Field but changed its name in 1964 to its present designation. The airport is also known as Capt. G. Allan Hancock Field. The first airline ever to serve in the airport was the Pacific Seaboard Air Lines. Now, Allegiant Air serves the airport. Today, the airport occupies land measuring 2,516 acres and features two runways with asphalted surfaces. As of 2017, the airport had a record of 38,519 aircraft operations. The airport is also home base for over 200 aircrafts used for general aviation. Nearby cities such as Ballard, Carpinteria, Isla Vista and other areas benefit from using the services of the airport.
