The airfield’s construction is similar to a few of the country’s island airports, where it is divided into a mainland portion and an island portion. Its passenger terminal and primary runway are both on the island, while a shorter track can be found on the mainland. The passenger terminal and primary runway were opened in May 1975, becoming the country’s first full-scale airfield made over water. The shorter airstrip on the mainland is now used as a helicopter landing area by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
